DescriptionA slightly yellowed page from the November 20, 1880 edition of Harper's Weekly Journal of Civilization, Vol. XXIV, No. 1247. The image is that of a large elephant standing on the edge of a cliff, his weight supported on his front feet and his back feet raised into the air as if he is kicking. On the piece of paper beneath the elephant's front feet is printed, "The Cause for which Lee and Jackson Fought." Several objects and people and animals are scattered throughout the picture: a decapitated mountain lion, a man carrying a sheet of paper bearing the words "Mortgage on the White House," a rag doll with a tag attached reading "Weaver's Baby," a man dressed in Native American garb with a band around his belly on which is printed "Tammany." The piece is signed on the plate, LRC, "Th: Nast. Not (the word not is underlined) from New Jersey." Printing from the page verso may be seen through the recto image.
