Abstracted/nonrespresentational design of mainly a red rectangle with a yellow rectangle behind it. On top of the red rectangle is a darker red (almost burgundy red) rectangle with specks of yellow in it. On top of the rectangles are oval designs.
Gift from the artist after her solo exhibition "Beneath the Surface--Monotypes" February 15-May 28, 2009.
Her artist statement about the monotypes reads:
"The current body of work, begun in 2007, consists of vividly colored paintings and monotypes that combine a primitive, gestural spontanaeity with a deep layering of paint washes. There's a kind of medieval quality suggested in the cramped spaces and the luminous color is reminiscent of stained glass windows. That they evoke a spiritual and psychological presence is not surprising. The color fields in the paintings and prints invite the viewer into imaginative worlds both strange and familiar.
Each painting begins with a visual idea and feeling. These deliberate strokes provide the foundation upon which the painting will evolve, much like the musician might pick a key and tempo. From there the paint is applied intuitively with each gesture and color informing the next. This improvisational process allows the artist to access unconscious impulses and while a painting can come together quickly the artist will throw in elements to make the resolution difficult for it is often in that struggle that some of the most interesting and deepest elements come into play.
These paintings are sensual and physical. The titles suggest a subtext that is both personal and allegorical. There is a sense of mystery in these lonely, isolated, beautiful spaces. Viewers are invited into the paintings to recognize in the work places they have known on an emotional level. "
