Gate to the Bishop's Place, Verdun, France
Print
Lithograph from two stones, first in beige ink for the background, and second in black ink for the remaining image, on cream medium weight paper with no watermark. The image depicts an arched gate in romanesque style being reconstructed. The arch itself is intact, with parts of the roof missing. In the right foreground is a large scaffold in front of a wall. In the arch stands a lone figure, and beyond the arch is a perspective view of more archways. Above is a sky with one large dominant cloud. The print is signed in the stone, with the signature "H Leigh" in reverse. The print is signed in pencil, "H Leigh" about 1/3 of the way from the left edge immediately below the image. The print is numbered in pencil "6/20" below the image to the right. This print is one of a series by Howard Leigh depicting the reconstruction of France after WWI, the French government bought this series of prints in the 1920s and this one is from the remainder of the edition.
