Empty Nest
Sculpture
This sculpture comprises three separate parts: a structure with sails, a removable nest, and a white stand containing a light and plugged in. The main structure is house-shaped, square with an angled roof. The outsides and roof are textured and colored in creme and grey. The front door is oxidized copper (or painted to appear so) and designed with a filigree center. The door has a small rounded handle on the left and swings open so that the nest can be placed inside the structure. The inside of the structure is wood. The back (opposite the door) is a creme textured resin. There are two pointed legs in the front of the structure and one in the back center. Extending up from the roof are two oxidized copper poles which are holding sails. The sails are made of wood and rice paper. The bottom three sections of rice paper are tan, and the top two are white. Attached to each sail's bottom is a small chain that runs through two small pulleys and holds a teardrop piece of oxidized copper. The chain and pendants hang freely about nine inches below the main structure. The nest piece which goes inside the structure is made of wood. It is textured on the top with the same structure texture except for colored pink and burgundy. The sides are painted black. The nest is made up of rusting copper, which looks like a barbed-wire and is formed in a circular way. There are three "birds" in the center. All three have bird-like skulls with a human body. Each is dressed in black pants with a different colored shirt, blue on the left, white in the center, and red on the right.
