Size: 25" x 19" (P) and 5.8125" x 6.375" (watercolor). An original watercolor painting executed and initialed by the artist. The image is suggestive of a flower configuration that appears to be in a vase and viewed from above. The central image consists of three circular lines arranged in a daisy-like configuration around a faintly yellow ovular center. To the right lower area of the flower, the image is a rounded configuration suggestive of the base of a vase with several circular lines rising out of it to meet the flower image; rising circular lines suggest the body of the vase. Primary colors are blue; secondary is yellow and green. Recognizable images surrounded faintly lines color field, creating the impression of movement in the background. Initials "LM" appear in rectilinear shape in the lower right.
1981.14.2.8 - Small bouquet of white flowers against a blue-green background. His initials are in the lower right corner in blue. Size: 25.75" x 19.75" (Paper) and the 17.5" x 12.25" (Image )Immediately recognizable images of flowers, perhaps peonies. Ten flowers at various stages of bloom appear in the picture, as well as four clearly distinguishable buds and eighteen leaves. Primary color blue with shades of yellow blended in. No manufacturer's watermark on paper. Artist's initials appear lower right of the pictorial plane; "LM" are the initials and they are set off from the pictures proper by a continuous ovular line just large enough to encircle the initials. "1978" appears
immediately below and slightly right of the artist's initials. Background color feels primarily a vertically lined rectangle in tones of blue and yellow; consistent of color field disturbed where blossoms appear - in the area immediately surround blossoms are accent lines which are consistent with blossom shapes and which suggest movement to the eye.
1981.14.2.9 - Close up of the white flowers in a bouquet. His initials are in the bottom right corner in blue as well as the date 1978. Size: 25.625" x 19.5" (P) 17.5" x 13.75" (I)
Immediately recognizable images of flowers, possibly rhododendrons, against a background field of light blue. The central image consists of six large blossoms, six leaves of which none are visible in their entirety, and a long stem extending from the bottom of the image to the lower center of the pictorial plane. Initials "LM" appears in the lower right of the pictorial plane encircled by a continuous ovular line of dark blue. Below the initials is the date "1978", also printed in dark blue. Color field background a continuous wash disturbed by circular lines around the central image which appear to suggest undulations of flowery configurations. The color scheme is predominantly blue with suggestions of greens and yellows. The central image appears to be a sketch rather than realistically rendered.
1981.14.2.10 - Two bouquets of flowers with long almost fern-like leaves. The flowers are white and against a black and white background. Size: 25.25" x 19.5" (P) 15.75" x 11.25" (I) Central image that of flower, possible azaleas, consisting of two blossom clusters; foreground cluster darkly outlined and to the upper left of the central pictorial plane. Background cluster to the upper right of pictorial plane center and sketched in lighter colors. Both clusters have stems protruding from points below their lower centers and extending to the lower quarter of the pictorial plane. Below plant forms is a vase configuration consisting of a triangular configuration with gently rounded lines which occupies the right central lower third of the picture space; immediately beneath this form is a rectilinear form and below it is a larger ovular shape that resembles the base of a vase. To the left of the vase, base form is the artist's signature which reads "Leonard McComb" and immediately below that and beginning directly beneath the "L" is "Leonard" is printed "January 1976". The date is printed over in its lower portions by the artists' initials "LM" printed in rust-colored ink and surrounded by a continuous thin line in rectangular dimensions and of the same color as the initials. The mood of the piece is dark although coloring is so subtle that mood tends to take a backseat to the qualities of the drawn image. Twelve leaves, all lanceolate, are part of the foreground image; the background image contains three (possibly four) lanceolate leaf shapes in varying degrees of completeness. Background color field an uneven wash of predominantly greys etched over by fine lines which roughly cohere to shapes of foreground and background images and tend to suggest movement with the picture plane. Hints of browns and yellows appear throughout the piece.
1981.14.2.11 - Close up of white flowers with large rounded leaves. Size: 25.5" x 19.75" (P) 17.5" x 13.75" (I) Image is a nearly full field depiction of blossoming and blossomed flowers clustered together as in a bouquet with leaves. The image consists of five individual flowers (possibly six, possible begonias) with ten clearly distinguishable leaf shapes (only three of which are visible in their entirety) surrounding the flower configurations. Leaves are ovular in their overall shape but slightly pointed at one end; veins are pronounced. The background color field of the piece is a primarily light blue wash with shades of brown and gold in some areas. Flower shapes are contour drawings that occupy approximately three-quarters of the entire picture plane; the remainder is occupied by the light blue color field earlier described and reiterative contour lines of a heavier blue than the surrounding light blue field; contour lines suggest a sense of movement in the color field. Flowers are primarily blue with hints of brown/gold on many of the pedals. Viewer attention is immediately drawn to flowers located slightly below and left of center-its stamens are visible and their pollen caps are readily distinguishable. Sheet bears no manufacturer's watermark. In the lower right of picture plane is printed the letters "LM" encircled by a continuous ovular line of blue that is darker than the blue wash over which it is laid.
1981.14.2.12 - Three closed buds in a vase. The image has a yellow tint. Size: 25.5" x 19.5" (P) 12.75" x 10". The color scheme is warm earth tones of gold, black, and brown. Image that of three flowers (appearing to be tulips complete with stems and leaves) in a vase that looks like a wine glad in that it has an elongated body, a stem, and a base. Background image suggests corner of a room with a long vertical line moving down from the top of the picture plane (approx. 2/3 of the way across the top from the left) to a point about ¾ of the way down the picture where it meets another line, forming a 90 degrees right angle; a line moves left from the intersection of the 90-degree angle, moving left at approx. a 60-degree slope and meeting a horizontal line slightly left of center and near the bottom of the picture plane. The horizontal line extends to the end of the picture's left vertical edge; where the horizontal and 60-degree lines meet, a vertical line which is partially obscured by the central image climbs to the top of the picture plane. In the lower left appears artist's signature "Leonard McComb" immediately followed by the date "1976". Below signature and date is written in rust-colored ink the initials "LM" with the familiar continuous thin line encircling it in a rectangular shape.
